Churchill Consulting Engineers served as prime consultant for this multi-disciplinary new ramp construction project at the confluence of I-295, NJ Route 42 and NJ Route 55 in the Boroughs of Bellmawr, Westville, Runnemede and Township of Deptford in Camden and Gloucester Counties, New Jersey.

This interchange handles daily traffic volumes of more than 250,000 vehicles and also has one of the highest accident rates in the state. The project objective was to improve traffic flow and safety by constructing the missing ramps: I-295 North connection to NJ Route 42 South and NJ Route 42 North connection to I-295 South including an additional lane from NJ Route 55 North and the realignment of ramps connecting NJ Route 42 to Benigno Blvd and Creek Road.

The Route 295/42 Missing Moves included 4 miles of 5-lane roadway construction, demolition of existing structures, construction of 1 new noise barrier, 9 new bridge structures, 15 retaining walls, and 12 sign support structures. Scope of work included building and structure demolition, including asbestos removal; significant drainage improvements, including directional drilling and pipe jacking beneath interstate roadway and ramps systems; excavation and disposal of regulated material; geotextile roadway stabilization; column-supported embankment systems; hot-mix asphalt (HMA) milling and HMA base, intermediate, and surface course paving including Stone Matrix Asphalt and Asphalt Stabilized Drainage Course; temporary sheeting; permanent sheeting; new multi-span bridge construction; retaining wall construction; noise wall, large-diameter drilled shaft foundations; steel H-Piles, fiberglass reinforced fender system with composite piles; overhead and cantilever sign support structures; drilled shaft/cast-in-place concrete pile supported foundations; 45” pre-tensioned, pre-stressed concrete beams; 60” and 78” welded plate girders; welded steel plate box girders; concrete pier columns and caps; concrete in substructure and superstructures; concrete bridge decks HPC; mechanically stabilized earth walls; concrete barrier and curb; ductile iron water and sewer pipes; fire hydrants; natural gas and underground electric relocations; electrical highway illumination and traffic signal systems; underdeck lighting; intelligent transportation systems (ITS); reinforced concrete pipe, inlet structures, manholes, cured in place pipe, underdrains, junction chambers and video inspections; highway signing and striping; temporary and permanent striping and markings; landscaping; site clearing and stripping; remediation of acid-producing soil and associated complex staging and maintenance and protection of traffic.
